Week 30 update

Enrolments to date: 27

Days to opening: 65

Building on schedule to open 1 February 2012

A huge thank you to all of the parents and students who have come in over the past couple of weeks to enrol and order their uniform for 2012. We will be placing an order next week and those who have pre-ordered will be guaranteed their uniform for starting on day 1 next year.
For those who have not enrolled or pre-ordered, we are able to take your order but cannot guarantee that our suppliers will be able to have the uniform back to us by 1 February although they will do their very best. Our size fit range is in the office for you to try on and our hours are:

Monday, Tuesday: 8am to 4pm
Wednesday: 10am to 6pm
Thursday, Friday: 8am to 4pm

This week we have been involved in setting up our initial library collection. As you can imagine this is a HUGE task, where do you start when there are so many fabulous books available? We asked our friends on twitter to let us know which books we couldn't leave out and so many of our favourites came back as essential reads! If you haven't told us your favourite - leave a comment on the blog …

On Tuesday we met with most of our 2012 staff for a day of professional learning. We started with a site visit and they were blown away with the environment that is being created for our children, both inside and outside the studios. We then worked on our curriculum and assessment design, linking all of this to our vision for learning at HPS.

On Wednesday we did the big walk round, measuring furniture and making final decisions on what we want for where. While we were there the library and reception desks were being installed - they are looking amazing!! We also spent quite a while measuring spaces for whiteware, looking a placement and design of rubbish bins and making sure all the sizes, colours and heights were going to fit in.

The senior leadership team have been in Wellington working with Mary Anne Mills of Core Education on developing our curriculum. This will inform the work we do with staff, students and community over the next few months as we develop the very best curriculum for our children.

Check out the photos of the new reception desk being installed!

Days to opening: 72

Building on schedule to open 1 February 2012

It is great to see so many parents coming in with their children to enrol and order their uniforms. Remember to come in during this week to make sure your uniform will be here in time for opening in February. The office will be open until 6pm and all orders received by Friday 25 November will be here in time for the first day of school.

In building news this week, it was fabulous to see the carpet going down and the vertiface going up! The colours are looking great and the studios looking more and more ready to welcome our students next year!
The courtyard is taking shape with some beautiful paving going in and the various stages and planters being built for the kids to enjoy - we can imagine how much they will love the outdoor stage!

Week 28 update

Enrolments: 12

Days to opening: 79

Buildings: on schedule to open 1 Feb 2012

Our school is set on 4.4 hectares and has beautifully designed indoor and outdoor spaces for children’s learning to take place. The outdoor spaces include a stage, grassy knoll, paved walkways and courtyards as well as fields and hard courts. Indoor spaces have been designed to take into account the very latest research on what works best to enhance learning and include performance studios, project rooms and interactive technologies.
Carpets, lino and internal cabinetry is being installed at the moment so the studios are looking more and more habitable every day!
Here are some photos of the outdoor area:

Our school uniforms are now available in the office! It has been a long journey of selecting, designing, colour matching, samples, logos and costing but we are now ready for orders.

Our uniforms are made by Argyle who manufacture many of the school uniforms around the country. They specialize in school uniforms and have designed a skirt and fleece especially for us, as well as assisting with the combining of other elements.

Our uniform is more of a wardrobe. We have a selection of components which can be worn in various combinations, allowing children to choose the colour and style that suits them. We have a fleece jacket, a t-shirt in two different colours of blue, a sports shirt (which is optional at this stage), a skirt or bootleg pants for girls and shorts or cargo pants for boys. A hat is compulsory in term 1 and term 4 as we are aiming to be a sun smart school.

We have chosen to stock the items at school as the nearest retail store that could supply these uniforms was Remuera or Howick, which we believed was too far away for parents to go. This has allowed us to keep the prices low but does mean that we cannot hold unlimited stock. We are relying on parents to pre-order items to ensure that they are here for the beginning of the school year. Argyle have estimated that orders placed with them would take 2 to 3 weeks to be made, embroidered and delivered to school.

Please come into the office to place your order before Friday 25 November to ensure that your child will be able to start the new year in their new school wearing their new uniform. We will, of course, allow students waiting for uniforms to attend school in the interim – we don’t want to stop them learning for lack of the right shorts!

Our office is open at the following times to allow families plenty of opportunity over the next 3 weeks to come in, try on the samples and place their order:

Monday to Friday                              8am to 6pm                                                                                Saturday and Sunday                    10am to 2pm

The photos of the uniform components are not great quality sorry, but you will get the idea from the photos of our two young models! Bring your children in and see how great it looks on them!

Week 27 update

Enrolments: 8

Days to opening: 87

Buildings: on schedule to open 1 Feb 2012

Some updates:
  • School uniforms are expected next week so check out facebook and twitter for updates (click the links to join at the top of the page)
  • 2012 Term Dates are loaded on the wiki here
Our building update this week is HUGE. There has been so much progress onsite over the past couple of weeks - the school is looking amazing.
Our outdoor environment is really starting to take shape now! A lot of the painting has been started and the colours are looking good. The colour palette from the interiors is followed through in the exterior painting providing a visual link between the indoor and outdoor environments.
At the front of the school the acoustic panels have been started, while in the courtyard the decks and garden are taking shape. The outdoor sitting areas are being formed with decking and retaining posts/walls being built as well as our outdoor stage area which will provide a lot of fun for our students as they perform for their friends. Throughout the school the courtyard areas have been paved with differing pavers providing our students with differing visual patterns and textures between the asphalt, exposed aggregate, smooth concrete and paving stones.
Our library has seen a lot of development over the past couple of weeks with bulkheads, window seats and the courtyard being developed. The library courtyard is going to prove to be a popular place to sit and read in the sun, the posts on each side will provide a visual through to the gardens while sitting against the wall in the warmth. You may find some of the teachers in there after school enjoying some quiet time while they catch up on some professional reading!
On Thursday we welcomed the ERO team to Hingaia Peninsula School. It was a pleasure to show them around the site and to discuss our educational vision and philosophy with them. The ERO team will complete a 'pre-opening' report for the MoE which will attest to our readiness to open in 2012. This report is not published in the traditional way that school reviews are published as it is commissioned for the MoE. We will have ERO back in July 2013 for a follow up and will begin our conventional review cycle in 2014.
